Tinctures have quickly become a popular method of cannabis consumption. They’re discreet, allow for accurate dosing, and provide fast-acting effects. The most common types of tinctures are THC and CBD varieties. These cannabinoids are the most prevalent in the cannabis plant, and they’re the most well-known. As scientists conduct more studies on the plant, their research is finding that the other cannabinoids in the plant may provide some significant benefits as well. One that’s gaining traction is CBN. Here, we’ll take a look at why you might consider trying a CBN tincture.

What Is CBN?

CBN is a “minor” cannabinoid present in the cannabis plant. The thing about it is that it’s not in fresh cannabis. It begins to appear in older cannabis, growing more abundant the more the plant ages. CBN is a byproduct of THC degradation.

As a derivative of THC, CBN does have some psychoactive effects. It’s not nearly as potent as THC, however, with only one-tenth of the strength.

Uses and Benefits of a CBN Tincture

One of the most significant potential benefits and uses of a CBN tincture is that it may help you fall asleep (and stay asleep) if you have insomnia. One small-scale study from the 1970s found that a mix of CBN and THC produced more sedative effects than CBN alone. Some researchers believe that CBN’s sedative properties are due to terpenes, other cannabinoids, and the entourage effect. A CBN tincture may, therefore, offer a fast-acting way to fall asleep, providing you with a treatment for insomnia.

Other benefits of a CBN tincture include:

Appetite Stimulation

Rodent studies show that CBN may trigger your appetite. Since it’s not nearly as intoxicating as THC, there’s less of a risk of any mind-altering effects, which means you may be able to eat without having to feel high in the process.

Antibacterial

Some studies show that CBN may be effective at fighting antibiotic-resistant strains of MRSA. The results show that the cannabinoid may provide an alternative to conventional treatments.

Glaucoma

One study on rabbits showed that CBN could reduce pressure behind the eyes. More studies are needed, but the results demonstrate that the cannabinoid may be beneficial for combatting glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness in the US.

Does CBN Have Any Side Effects?

As with other cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, CBN may have some side effects if taken in large quantities. They may include such effects as:

  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite

Generally, these effects only occur if you consume a lot of CBN. To avoid them, you should start with a low dose and gradually increase what you take until you find what works best for you. While it may take a little more time to find your dose, this method allows you to find your ideal dose without going overboard.

While CBN research is still in its early stages, the results from current studies show some promising results. A CBN tincture may offer fast-acting treatment for insomnia, low appetite, poor immunity, and more. Check your local dispensary for tinctures, and other CBN products, during your next visit.
